Inspections at Wholesale Fruit, Vegetable Markets in Bulgaria
Teams of officers of
the National Revenue Agency, the Customs Agency and the Bulgarian Food Safety
Agency, have been inspecting border crossing points and big wholesale fruit and
vegetable markets in the country since 4.30 am on Wednesday in an operation
targeting cheap imports.
In Sofia, inspectors
are checking the wholesale markets in the the "Slatina" and
"Druzhba" residential districts, according to reports of Darik radio.
The inspectors are
checking the origin, quality and safety of fruits and vegetables offered on the
wholesale markets.
The operation is part
of the set of urgent measures initiated by Agriculture Minister Dimitar Grekov
to protect domestic agricultural production.
The inspections were
triggered by a peak of protests of agricultural producers from the southern
Bulgarian cities of Sandanski and Plovdiv, who have been staging roadblocks and
throwing out fruits and vegetables on the road since the end of last week due
to the lack of a market for their production and the low purchase prices.
Bulgaria's Ministry
of Agriculture and Food is expected to come up with an official announcement on
the mass inspections later on Wednesday.

Farm Produce Imported
from Neighbouring Countries Subjected
to Border Control
Checks
Sofia - The
agricultural produce imported from Greece,Turkey, Macedonia and other
neighbouring counties is subjected to 24-hour control at Bulgaria's border
checkpoints, the Finance Ministry said in a press release on Wednesday.
All means of
transport carrying fruits and vegetables from these countries are subjected to
customs and tax checks. The inspectors also check the documents for the
produce's origin, invoices and other accounting records. The idea is to stop
the attempts to declare unrealistically low customs value of goods imported
from third countries, as well as practices of VAT evasion in Bulgaria.
If proven effective,
the checks at commodity exchanges and wholesale markets for agricultural
produce and at the borders will continue in the next three months, Agriculture
and Food Minister Dimitar Grekov told a news conference at the Council of
Ministers on Wednesday.
The last checks at
several wholesale markets and commodity exchanges found a consignment of 10
tonnes of bad-quality tomatoes from Greece, Grekov said, adding that the batch
has been impounded. There are also customs tariff violations and financial
documents offered on Bulgarian exchanges, he noted.
